Over the winter months we get frequent calls from repairers who have experienced drive ability issues showing faults on fuel pressure loss for vehicles having common rail Diesel fuel systems.
Many of the issues are resolved by replacement of the fuel filter, with a large number of these vehicles being found to have poor or limited service history.
A number of vehicle manufacturers recommend replacement of diesel fuel filters at three year intervals or between thirty and fifty thousand miles. Such intervals are often found to be too large and replacement of the filter is often overlooked at this age and mileage particularly after owner change and as the vehicles hit the independent repairer outlets where customers have little knowledge of the vehicles past history.
It is critical that the past history of the vehicle is obtained and the use of manufacturer's digital service records can assist with this as replacement of service components are often detail on such systems.
Visit; www.dieselfilter.org.uk to complete a survey if you have been affected by such issues! Vehicle breakdowns through blocked diesel fuel filters can occur at any time throughout the year with numbers increasing at certain times during the winter, leading to significant inconvenience to the affected motorist. The combined fuel and automotive industries have been working hard through a coordinated BSI taskforce, to try to understand the cause. The UK government through the Department for Transport is supporting the efforts to understand and find a resolution and would like to gather detailed information from any motorists affected by this issue. All information you provide will be treated confidentially and will only be used to help identify the cause of fuel filter blocking in diesel vehicles.
