Polo poor compression and idling problems so had new valves, head skim, etc. Seemed ok, but a few hundred miles later engine management light now comes on when revving over 4000 rpm and shortly after runs on just 2 cylinders. Turn ignition off and on again to reset and light off, runs ok, until hard revving etc.
16687 - p0303 - 35 - 10 misfire detected intermittent
Tried swapping around coil packs, injectors, spark plugs but still the same problem. Any ideas?

HI, Which engine is in this one? Some engines in the VAG range are not designed to have cylinder head skims carried out on them as it can affect compression pressures and piston to valve contact, we can check for you if you get the engine code. Some of the engines have been suffering from cracked heads and valve seat problems which can result in compression loss under certain conditions, these tend to come up with this sort of fault code or catalyst codes (commonly P0420) after extended driving time. Emissions testing and manifold vacuum testing at idle may identify any air loss but if the problem only occurs after having been driven for a while these checks may not show anything at idle. I assume the misfire is always on the same cylinder (cylinder 3) despite having swapped components over?

I took to VW main dealer for £60 diagnostic check. They thought knackered Cat and 2 coil packs which weren't genuine VWs were the problem. Wanted over £1000 to replace so I went to Kwick Fit instead and had a new Cat for £300. Also put on 3 new genuine VW coil packs. However, as before, as soon as the revs go to 4500 or so, the engine management light comes on, runs rough as before. Diagnostics still saying P0303 cylinder 3 misfire.
Engine is a 1.2 petrol but I will get engine number tomorrow...

No Such engine code??
1.2 6 valve could be BMD or BBM for example or 12 valve units may have BME or BZG engine codes.
You would normally find the code on a bar code label near the engine bracket at the timing end of the engine or on the vehicle data label in the boot on VAG models

OK Thanks,
This is one which does not allow the head to be skimmed!
See in the description; "Sealing surface must not be reworked."
Hope this helps
