We have a 2004 (54) Ford C-Max 1.6TDCi 110bhp Diesel with a nasty engine rattle at anything over 2,500 rpm, most noticeable under load but its there even stationary, it will also do it on over run so we know its not a fuel injector knocking, it seems to be from the top end but we haven't stripped it yet, just trying to find out if anyone has had similar issues before we start getting very involved. Its been well maintained with a service / oil change every 10 - 12,000 miles and it has covered just 82k. Anyone had similar issues? please let us know, many thanks.

Hi,

Without knowledge of the type of 'Noise' present it is difficult to comment with any degree of certainty.

We have had a few comments that these engines can suffer failure of the timing chain guide in the head which would result in mechanical noise, however they do not tend to do that for long prior to the chain locking and coming through the head cover!!

Fuel related noises are much more common including the possibility that injector coding may require verification which is something generally easy to do if you have access to suitable diagnostic kit to check the calibration codes are correct for the relevant injectors & cylinder locations.

We have had many reports of injector seal leaks which causes combustion gasses to escape past the injector which we understand can be mistaken as a mechanical knock at idle or under acceleration. It is not uncommon to find that the build up of carbon around the injector can create some difficulty in extracting injectors if they have been leaking for some time!

Let us know what you find once stripped, any images may be of assistance to others if you find any physical defects!

Regards

One noise is cured by replacement of the crankshaft pulley, the balance weights had become loose causing a rattling noise, a simply crank pulley replacement. We will post the details for the top end rattle / knock as soon as we have it fixed.

The timing chain guide & tensioner for the camshafts has sorted the noise.
