1 SAFETY ADVICE
Owing to the high temperatures, safety precautions must be respected, and the pressure circuit must never be opened and separated except at the exhaust pipe unions
2 OPERATING PRINCIPLE
The particle filter, placed under the body on the catalytic pre-converter, limits the polluting emissions by accumulating the unburnt particles from the exhaust gases (loading phase), then the particles are eliminated by combustion ( the regeneration phase).The injection computer uses the sensors to measure the temperature as well as the exhaust gas pressure upstream and downstream of the particle filter. The injection computer is constantly evaluating the degree of clogging in the particle filter from the pressure difference upstream and downstream of the particle filter. When it is clogged, the two temperature values inform the injection computer that the temperature conditions are high enough (approximately 600˚C) to start the regeneration cycle. This consists of burning the particles held in the particle filter, to do this injection is switched to delayed injection mode and the fuel not burned in the combustion chambers burns the residues contained in the particle filter cells.
The particle filter load level depends on the user's driving style. During an average trip combined cycle and motorway of more than 15 minutes, the particle filter automatically burns the particles without being noticed by the driver other than some white smoke, this is spontaneous regeneration. If the operating temperature is not high enough to trigger spontaneous regeneration, clogging increases until it exceeds 35 g. An acceleration request to trigger spontaneous regeneration is then sent to the driver via the instrument panel warning light, the same happens if several attempts to regenerate have failed. If these conditions are still not met and clogging exceeds 45 g. At this stage a warning light comes on and the SERVICE CHECK ANTIPOLLUTION message appears. Static regeneration using suitable Diagnostic equipment must now be performed in the workshop
